What custom software actually costs, line by line

Discovery, design, engineering, integration, QA and the running cost nobody budgets for.

Most software decisions fail long before a line of code is written. They fail because the business problem was never written down precisely enough for anyone to disagree with it. Before you choose a stack, a vendor or a budget, write one paragraph that describes what is expensive, slow or invisible in your operation today.

Once that paragraph exists, the decision becomes a comparison rather than a leap of faith. A standard product that covers the paragraph is cheaper than anything custom. A paragraph that no product covers — usually because it describes the specific way you make money — is the case for building.

What to decide first

Fix the scope of the first release to the smallest thing that removes real work from real people. Everything else is a phase two candidate. The teams who ship successfully are the ones who resisted putting the whole five-year roadmap into version one.

What it costs

Budget bands move with integrations, compliance and the number of distinct user roles, not with the number of screens. Two systems with identical interfaces can differ by a factor of three once one of them has to talk to an ERP and satisfy an auditor.

If you want a specific number for your own situation, the estimator returns a recommended product, modules, integrations, a budget band and a timeline in a few minutes.

You already have the idea. Let's define what comes next.
